THE WEMYSS FAMILY

Pronounced ‘Weems’; the Scots language word for caves, the historic Scottish clan and family traces its roots from the ancient Kingdom of Fife in Scotland. For over six centuries, the ancestral home and seat of The Earl of Wemyss; Wemyss Castle has sat atop ancient caves that have been formed into the sea-battered cliffs.

For many centuries Scottish barley has been grown in the surrounding area of the Wemyss Castle, barley that would eventually be used for making of Scotch whisky…

A HISTORY STEEPED IN UISGE-BEATHA (THE WATER OF LIFE)

The Wemyss family was noted in the developing history of the Scotch whisky industry during the 19th century when John Haig built his first distillery, Cameron Bridge, now the largest spirit producing distillery in Europe, on Wemyss family land.

Today, highly prized Scottish barley is grown by farmers on the Wemyss Estate and is used by many leading distillers to make their malt whisky.

FAMILY OWNED AND OPERATED

Founded by Williams Wemyss in 2005, he utilised his background expertise in premium French wine making and the family’s Scottish roots to begin exploring the blending of quality single malt whiskies.

Whisky, new make spirit, oak casks and mature whisky are expertly sourced by William’s sister, Isabella Wemyss, to produce superior, small-batch blended malt Scotch whiskies.

THE ART OF WHISKY BLENDING


WEMYSS MALTS APPROACH

Wemyss Malts takes a careful and focused approach to blending, using only a small selection of whisky from hand-picked casks to carefully craft distinctive and flavourful blended malt Scotch whiskies (previously known as ‘vatted or ‘pure’ malt Scotch whiskies).

WEMYSS MALTS HOUSE STYLE

Wemyss Malts utilise core and signature malt whiskies from multiple Scottish regions. We source and mature whisky stock of varying ages for our recipes. This provides our blenders with a plethora of flavours that allow for the crafting of complex blended malt scotch whiskies. Our aim is to always delight whisky drinkers with distinctly flavoured recipes whilst always striving for balance and smoothness.

IT’S ALL IN THE NAME

The Wemyss Malts range champions the flavours and aromas that can be discovered in our beautifully balanced blended malts and distinctive single cask offerings.

Industry experts, alongside the Wemyss Malts team spend many long hours (somebody has to do it!) delighting in the complexly nuanced flavours and aromas that can be found in each whisky, eventually ‘distilling’ an expansive tasting note down into a single impactful and easy to understand name.

WORKING WITH THE EXPERTS

Wemyss Malts employs the expertise (and nose!) of Charlie Maclean, an authority on Scotch whisky and the creator of the Scotch whisky flavour wheel. Charlie, alongside other industry experts, assists in the creation, quality control and naming of all of Wemyss Malts whiskies.

Taking a leaf from Charlie’s book, the Wemyss Malts panel of whisky developers create colourful and descriptive flavour-led names to describe all of our whiskies.

After all, thanks to the science of distillation, the magic of wood maturation and the art of blending there is a never-ending plethora of flavours and aromas to discover in Scotch whisky.
